Are you struck in your Psychology Career then this is for you!!
To my knowledge, most people who took Psychology as a career are not pursuing any job in this field. After the degree and some years of trying they shift into some other profession like government jobs, IT companies, Data entry, Medical Rep, Sales Executive, Marketing manager, and so on. These people regret choosing Psychology mainly because this career didn’t give them what they expected.
While choosing a career students look for
- The field in which they are passionate
- The scope of that field in the future and
- The salary that they can expect.
Many students end up choosing the field that they are interested in and don’t mind much about the future of the field and the salary or money that they can make from this field. And it is truly not needed if they are really passionate about it.
Students confuse between interest and Passion. The students who took the field out of interest will start seeing the interest fade if they come across hardship in the field and at last, they quit. But people who are passionate do not mind whatever happens, they keep on moving and do what gives them happiness.
Psychology is not one among the fields. It is very unique. You cannot get a job easily after finishing the degree because Psychology is not a field in which you can get the job, it is the field in which you make jobs for yourself and others.
- Setting up a foundation
- Establishing yourself as a School Psychologist
- Opening a clinic for counselling
- Starting an NGO
- Conducting and Organising Psychology programs
- Conduct Workshop
- Conduct seminar/ Webinar
- Do campaign
- Establishing yourself as a trainer
- Establishing yourself as a therapist
- Establishing yourself as a consultant Psychologist
- Taking up projects from Companies and institutions
- Community outreach coordinator
- Becoming research assistant
In the current Globalization and Industrialization majority of people look for people who can do material/ action jobs. Very few works on individuals’ mental health and understanding and improving human life. While studying students were told and studied only about improving people’s mental health because Psychology is the only field which focuses on improving the mental wellness of people. So keeping that in mind when students prepare for that and get into the field they are shocked to see that their jobs are indirectly replaced by many others in many ways.
Indirectly such as
- Religion
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Listening to Music
- Watching Movies
- Watching self-improvement videos
- Reading/Listening Self-help books
- Talking to friends
- Motivational speakers
- Unqualifies professionals provide counselling and therapies
I didn’t say the above those things will cure them from what they are going through. But when you suggest people to go to a counsellor they point out the above matters and don’t approach a psychologist that easily. Even if people are willing to get help from professionals the fear of stigmatization stops them.
The painful area for Psychologists is that people don’t care much about them like the respect for the profession. People in India still don’t bother much about mental health, I’m not saying totally.
As I already said Psychology is not like other fields because in the field there will be companies waiting to recruit an employee year by year. But those kinds of jobs are very low for Psychology students.
To become a School Psychologist, you need to go to a school to prove why school students need a Psychologist. We need to win teachers who come with what these people can do, I’m his/her class teacher I’m watching them now and then, I give advice, I know everything about my students, there is no use for them here.
Even if you try to become a trainer in an MNC or Organizational sector, you need to beat the HR of that company who already conducts team-building activities, fun activities, self-improvement activities etc.
Anywhere you go, you need to prove yourself because, unlike other fields, many people use their own Psychology in their field, it has become basic nowadays. A marketing agent knowingly or unknowingly uses Psychological principles to sell a product, his motto is to complete the given task, if they use Psychology along, the job will be over soon. It has become the basic level of thinking nowadays
Another major crisis faced by psychologists and Psychology students is from their seniors. If you try to start anything or do practice you will be questioned about with what qualifications are you doing this. The real problem is not the qualification entirely, it is about the scarcity and success that a junior might own. Let me tell you my own example, I prepared students to do peer counselling so that they practice and help each other at the same time. However, a staff who completed his PhD was against it. He was charging about 3k per hour. He asked me, ‘What is the respect for my degree if they start to do counselling, I have spent years preparing for it, how can just UG students do counselling’. He manipulated the management and the management ordered not to do counselling training or peer counselling hereafter in the department. It looks like people who spend years studying to reach a certain stage have ego issues as in other fields, take the film industry for that example, when a new hero emergence and gives hit after hit, if he has a strong fan base, the senior working in that industry would be jealous of him, the same happens in here too.
But when career is concerned, there is not no limit. The scope for Psychology never ends. It has the most wide scope. It is up to one’s ability to make money from it. One should be clear about what he wants to do first. Is he/she going to take the field into service-oriented or business-oriented
- Service-oriented helping individuals to improve their mental wellness, helping to reach their self-actualization
- Business-oriented helps businesses to achieve their goal and make more profit. If you travel in the path of business you can make more money than in Service oriented.
You need to choose this on the basis of your financial background and backup because as a grownup your career should be able to support your living. When you are satisfied with your living, you provide more input in the field. Peace begins at home
I really feel great for choosing Psychology as my career. First of all, I had the opportunity to pursue the career which I wanted. I came across many people during the course, who shared that they wanted to pursue Psychology but because of the situations, they weren’t able to do so. Knowing about yourself is the most fundamental thing which my career helped me out. Which in turn it paved a way to help others.
